What
is Chiropractic? |
Chiropractic
is now the largest non-medical healing art in the world, attracting
everyone. But as you read these words there are millions more
sick and suffering people, many living on drugs, perhaps facing
surgery, who don’t know that help may be (literally) around
the corner. There are case histories of people recovering from
nearly every known disease and condition under chiropractic
care: heart trouble, hyperactivity, ear infections, fatigue,
allergies, digestive problems, colds, flu and hundreds of other
conditions. Are you one of these people? |
What
is a Subluxation? |
A
Subluxation is a distortion or misalignment in your spine that
irritates your nervous system resulting in overall disharmony
or malfunction. Subluxations affect the health of your nerves,
ligaments, discs and joints; weaken your muscles; decreasing
the energy that flows from your brain and nerves to all parts
of your body. Your internal organs may get less blood and your
brain may get less oxygen!
You can have subluxations in your body for years without
noticing any effects. Eventually however they can weaken you
to the point where you do begin to develop symptoms, have
lowered resistance and ultimately fall prey to sickness and
diseases of all kinds.
|
How
do I get Spinal Subluxations? |
Subluxations
occur because of different stresses in our lives. It may occur
in infancy from a difficult child birth or from childhood falls.
Studies show that by ten years old one has had 1500 spinal traumas.
Later in life, emotional tension or stress can gradually damage
your spine and violent injuries from automobile accidents or
sports can suddenly knock you “out of whack.”
Nearly everyone eventually gets vertebral subluxations. It
is a “hidden epidemic” and it is for that reason
that you need to have you and your family’s spines checked
for this condition by a doctor of chiropractic - just as you
get your eyes, teeth and blood pressure checked!

What
is the Activator Method Technique?
|
Doctors
of Chiropractic receive extensive training in the Activator Technique. This method is also one of the most scientifically
researched techniques in chiropractic. |
Does
the Activator work with children?
|
The Activator Technique works well for children because it is quick and easy.
Even young children who may have problems keeping still typically
have no problems with Activator adjustments. Many even look forward to their next visit! |
Does
the Activator work with the elderly?
|
Elderly
patients benefit from the Activator Technique as well. The unique Activator adjustment offers a more gentle and effective care approach
for elderly patients who suffer from degeneration, arthritis,
and osteoporsis. |
What
causes the noise of an adjustment? |
That's
a loaded question because not all adjusting techniques that
chiropractors use produce the popping noise we associate with
"cracking our knuckles." Some chiropractic adjusting
techniques make no sound at all. But many chiropractors do use
techniques that create in many instances the popping sound of
a spinal "release;" so what causes the noise? A few
years ago the mystery may have been solved. A British research
team took X-ray movies of a person "popping" his knuckles
and found that gas (80% carbon dioxide) rushes in to fill a
partial vacuum created when the joint surfaces are slightly
separated. It is this displacement of joint fluid which some
believe to be the cause of the noise. |
Is
it bad to "crack" your neck or back a lot? |
This
question is frequently asked because people associate the
"cracking" or "popping" of one's back
or neck with a chiropractic adjustment. The two are not the
same thing. If a person has a desire to "crack"
his/her neck or back it is often because one area of their
spine is fixated or jammed causing another area to move too
much and "pop", sometimes by itself. It's the fixated
or jammed area that needs to be properly adjusted by a chiropractor
so that the other parts of the spine will not be hypermobile
and noisy.
When
you "crack" your back you may be relieving the tension
for a little while. Do you notice how it keeps coming back?
That is because you are not giving yourself a specific chiropractic
adjustment. The cause of the spinal tension, the fixated or
jammed (subluxated) vertebrae, has not been corrected.
Old wives'
tales say popping or cracking your joints causes arthritis
or makes your knuckles bigger. There isn't any research supporting
that, but if tension keeps building up in the joints because
of spinal imbalance, it may not be the popping or cracking
that's so bad for you, but the spinal stress and imbalance
causing it. |
Can
you tell if you need a chiropractic adjustment on your own? |
Generally,
no. A subluxation can be likened to a dental cavity; you may
have one developing for a long time with no noticeable symptoms.
That's why periodic spinal examinations by a chiropractic doctor
are recommended.
However, after a long period of time under chiropractic care,
some people become much more spine conscious and can actually
be able to tell when they need an adjustment. The effects
of vertebral subluxations are often gradual and slowly eat
away at your well-being in tiny increments. For that reason,
an occasional spinal checkup by a chiropractor is advisable.
|
How
long does a spinal adjustment take? |
Usually
just a few minutes to a quarter of an hour (more or less) after
the chiropractor is familiar with the patient's spine. It all
depends on the adjusting technique that the chiropractor is
using. Sometimes it takes a few hours, or even a few days of
evaluation and spinal analysis for a new patient to get an initial
adjustment. Other times it may take a relatively brief initial
visit, case history and evaluation which can be done the same
day. |
Can
a person who had back surgery see a chiropractor? |
Yes. Many
people who have hade various types of spinal surgery often discover
a return to the same back problems months or years later. There
are so many of these people around that the condition has a
special name; "Failed Back Surgery Syndrome." These
people can usually receive chiropractic care without undue worry.
Usually the chiropractic care will save them from future back
operations. It's best to check with your chiropractor on a case-by-case
basis. |
Can
chiropractic prevent back surgery? |
In a majority
of cases the answer is a resounding "yes"! |
